How We Got Here

A good friend of mine, Tom King, the Executive Director of Campus Safety at Haverford College, approached me and asked if I could conduct a security assessment of the campus and provide a roadmap for the future. I jumped at the opportunity. As we began discussing the project, Tom King, John Casterge, and I formulated a plan to assess campus security and develop a roadmap for future-proofing technologies.

Somewhere during the conversation, Tom mentioned Vision 2020, and I remember joking that I’d have to put a dollar in a jar every time I used the term Vision 2020, which eventually morphed into VIZION20XX and is now known as VIZION360. Tom had one goal: to retire knowing he left the college in better shape than when he found it.

Tom passed away a couple of years ago after retiring, but I am pleased to say that he left Haverford in a much better state than when he found it. His legacy continues to live on today, every time I walk a college campus and think about how to make it a safer environment where students can excel.

Most organizations don’t struggle with security because they’re missing security systems, protocols, or training. They struggle because those systems were installed at different times, for different reasons, and were never meant to operate as one.

LARGO has spent hours working with clients in environments where everything appears to be working. Cameras are online, access is being monitored, alarm points are installed, procedures are in place, and the team seems well-trained. But when an incident happens, information comes in late, decisions are delayed, and teams end up relying on experience rather than clear, timely insight, the problems become glaring.

At LARGO Consulting Services, that’s usually where the real conversation starts! Not with technology, but with how your security program holds up when it’s under pressure.

Seeing the Program as It Really Operates

It’s important to understand the current reality of the security program before discussing how to fix it or modernize it.

Policies generally describe how security should work, whereas daily activities highlight how it is working. The difference between the two is where risk exists.

We take a close look at how information flows, who ends up making decisions, and where visibility starts to fade. Often, the systems themselves aren’t the problem. They’re doing exactly what they were built to do; they were just never meant to operate as a unified platform.

What Vizion360 Really Means in Practice

LARGO’s VIZION360 process is often misunderstood as a framework or methodology. In practice, it’s closer to a way of thinking.

Vizion360 takes a 360-degree view of security, enabling us to see the security program as a whole rather than just its parts. Not just the technology, policies, plans, or people, but how operations, systems, and people intersect to function together. VIZION360 helps stakeholders identify the right questions early, before new solutions are selected or existing ones are expanded.

By taking a 360-degree perspective, it’s easier to identify gaps, overlaps, and misaligned parts, making it clearer to understand which improvements will make a difference versus those that simply add another layer.

Integration Is About Clarity, Not Complexity

True integration does not mean everything just works together. It means the right systems support the right decisions, the right automations, and the right responses.

When disparate systems work together or are unified within an overall security program, teams can spend less time managing multiple systems and focus on real-time events to mitigate risk, threats, and vulnerabilities.

That clarity allows security to move from its reactive posture to an informed one.

Turning Experience into Intelligence

Every organization naturally builds intelligence from its history, the experience of its people, and recurring patterns in daily work. By adopting an intelligence-driven security program, this foundation becomes even stronger—systems connect, information flows more freely, and teams can make smarter decisions and respond faster, using lessons from the past to identify risks early. Vizion360 makes sure valuable insights aren’t lost between systems or departments, but are captured, shared, and put to good use.

When Systems, Policies, and People Align

The problem may not be your software or hardware. Procedures, policies, plans, and training often don’t match real-world situations. Training doesn’t fit the systems in use, and responsibilities can overlap, leading to inefficiency in daily work and confusion during incidents, emergencies, and disasters. VIZION360 helps stakeholders align systems, policies, and people to ensure consistent performance in daily operations or extreme emergency conditions.

What Will The Future Hold

Vizion360 encourages thinking beyond daily security operations and focuses on what the future holds by thinking about how emerging technologies will scale, taking the time to evaluate them properly, and resisting decisions made purely out of urgency.

Over my 40-plus years of experience in the security industry, I don’t think I have ever seen a security program that was perfect, or even close to perfect. I have seen diligent security officers who did a great job for a client, with little or no training. I have seen multimillion-dollar security system deployments that lacked stability due to poor preventive maintenance and were compromised by a single piece of rock salt.

Maintaining a security system that will stand the test of time is an everyday process. Keeping the system working as designed requires future-proofing and planning years in advance of a system’s end of lifecycle. So start planning today.

A Practical Path Forward

LARGO Consulting Services helps organizations build security programs grounded in real-world decision-making. A fully integrated, reliable, smart, and secure security program doesn’t come from a single fix. The program is developed over time through informed decisions, clear priorities, and a complete understanding of how security functions.
